Hello! Hello!

I’m thrilled that Shadow Light has been published by Fomite Press.

A sense of place is critical to me. I take a few moments to synch with the natural world wherever I am. This book of poetry is flush with the core of several places - and the people who live there - that have been central to me over the years.

My inspiration comes from closely watching the natural world. Like down on my knees on damp spring ground to eyeball the unfathomable beauty of a Bird foot violet.
Like eyeballing the delicate teeth of rime ice on an empty milkweed pod. Like watching wind hurl treetops in a hedgerow. Or stopping to admire a dandelion that has muscled its way through compost to bloom in the light.
In Shadow Light’s poems, I explore parallels between the natural world and the human experience: symmetry yet randomness, predictability yet uncertainty, astounding beauty and breathtaking destruction. Sometimes explanation, other times conclusion, always illuminating.
My poems have appeared in Sow’s Ear Poetry Review, qarttsiluni, the Portland Sunday Telegram, Off the Coast, and other publications.

I live in Burlington, Vermont with Sharon Coleman, my wife, and two cats. If you were here, I’d invite you in for coffee and my homemade chocolate chip cookies.

I’ve been a college professor, newspaper editor and publisher, radio copywriter and production director, bookmobile driver, and warehouse and factory worker among many other jobs over the years.

I’m an early riser to my office, where I write while listening out my window to birds through the seasons. I’m working on a novel. After that, I’ll get back to a full-length, two-act play that needs revision.

I hope you enjoy the poems in Shadow Light.
